How Our Driving School Works With The

Kansas Graduated Drivers License

 

Because We Are A State Certified Driving School, We Provide The Written And Driving Tests So Your Student Can Acquire All Their Permits And Restricted Licenses

Without Having To Take The Tests At The Drivers License Office

  • State Issued Instruction Permit at 14 > Privileges - Driving with a licensed adult 21 or over.

    • ALERT! - Students Must Get Their State Issued Permit As Soon As They Turn 14  To Be Eligible For The Restricted License When They Turn 15! The State Requires Students To Hold The State Issued Permit For A Full Year Before They May Be Issued A Restricted License.

    •  At the end of our Classroom Session your student will receive a "Driving School Instruction Permit"​ that may be exchanged for the State Issued Instruction Permit at the Drivers License Office without having to take the written test. 

  • Restricted License at 15 > Privileges - Driving To or from work; To or from school on days when school is in session, over the most direct and accessible route between the licensee's residence and school of enrollment for the purposes of school attendance, may not transport any non-sibling minor passengers.

    • ALERT! - Students Must Complete A Driving School Course To Be Eligible For The Restricted License At 15.

    • Once our driving school course has been completed, your student will be presented with a "Certificate Of Completion" that, once the one year State Issued Permit requirement has been met, the student ​may exchange at the Drivers License Office for this restricted license without having to take the driving test. Certain practice driving requirements must be met as well.

  • Restricted License at 16 > Privileges - Driving anywhere from 5am to 9pm; anytime going to or from work; anytime going to or from authorized school activities; directly to or from any religious worship service held by a religious organization; no more than one non-sibling passenger under the age of 18.

    • As with the Restricted License at 15, our "Certificate Of Completion" may be exchanged at the Drivers License Office for the 16 Year Old Restricted License.​ Practice driving requirements apply here as well.

  • Unrestricted License at 17 - Full driving privileges.

    • Our "Certificate Of Completion" can also be exchanged for this license as indicated above, provided certain practice driving requirements have been met. ​

The Complex Kansas Graduated Drivers License Requirements

 

The State Of Kansas Publishes The Detailed Information Below That Includes The Required Documents, Practice Driving Time, Driving Restrictions, And Driving Privileges Of The Kansas Graduated Drivers License. Although Thorough, It Can Be Quite Confusing. So, At The End Of Each Of Our Classroom Sessions, Students Receive A Take-Home Packet With Step By Step Instructions That Will Greatly Simplify And Streamline The Process. 

 

Here Are The Details: 

STATE ISSUED INSTRUCTION PERMIT - Ages 14, 15 & 16 

  • Present acceptable proof of identity [at a Drivers License Exam Station]

  • Age: Minimum 14 years old

  • Testing required: Vision. Written - or Instruction Permit Issued By A Driving School [Provided At Our School]

  • Parental approval required: Yes for 14 and 15 year olds

  • Driver education required: No

  • Driving restrictions: Licensed adult in front seat at all times - minimum age 21

  • Wireless restriction: No use of wireless communication devices except to report illegal activity or to summons medical or emergency help

  • Passenger restriction: No

  • Time required to be held: 1 year to advance to restricted license

 

INSTRUCTION PERMIT - AGE 17 AND UP

  • Present acceptable proof of identity [at a Drivers License Exam Station]

  • Age: Minimum 17 years old

  • Testing required: Vision. Written - or Instruction Permit Issued By A Driving School [Provided At Our School]

  • Parental approval required: No

  • Driver education required: No

  • Driving restrictions: Licensed adult in front seat at all times - minimum age 21

  • Wireless restriction: No

  • Passenger restriction: No

  • Time required to be held: None

FARM PERMITS - AGE 14 AND 15

  • Present acceptable proof of identity

  • Age: Minimum 14 years old but less than 16.

  • Testing required: Vision. Written and Drive - or Certificate Of Completion Issued By A Driving School [Provided At Our School]

  • Parental approval required: Yes

  • Farm affidavit required: Yes

  • Driver education required: No

  • Instruction permit required: No

  • 50 Hour affidavit required: No - must provide prior to 16 to move to lesser restrictions

  • Driving restrictions: To or from farm job, employment or other farm related work; To or from school on days when school is in session, over the most direct and accessible route between the licensee's residence and school of enrollment for the purposes of school attendance; Anytime/anywhere with licensed adult - minimum age 21

  • Wireless restriction: No use of wireless communication devices except to report illegal activity or to summons medical or emergency help

  • Passenger restriction: May not transport any non-sibling minor passengers

  • Time required to be held: At 16 will move to less restricted privileges if 50 hour affidavit has been turned in

RESTRICTED DRIVER’S LICENSE - AGE 15

  • Present acceptable proof of identity [at a Drivers License Exam Station]

  • Age: Minimum 15 years old but less than 16

  • Testing required: Vision

  • Parental approval required: Yes

  • Driver education required: Yes [our school meets all State requirements]

  • Instruction permit required: Yes - must have held at least 1 year

  • 50 hour affidavit required: No - at 15 must have at least 25 hours; must provide 50 prior to 16 to move to lesser restrictions

  • Driving restrictions: To or from work; To or from school on days when school is in session, over the most direct and accessible route between the licensee's residence and school of enrollment for the purposes of school attendance; Anytime/anywhere with licensed adult - minimum age 21

  • Wireless restriction: No use of wireless communication devices except to report illegal activity or to summons medical or emergency help

  • Passenger restriction: May not transport any non-sibling minor passengers

  • Time required to be held: At 16 will move to less restricted privileges if 50 hour affidavit has been turned in, and maintains a satisfactory driving record

 

LESS RESTRICTED PRIVILEGES - AGE 16

  • Present acceptable proof of identity [at a Drivers License Exam Station]

  • Age: Minimum 16 years old but less than 17

  • Testing required: Vision. Written and Drive - or Certificate Of Completion Issued By A Driving School [Provided At Our School] 

  • Parental approval required: No

  • Driver education required: No

  • Instruction permit required: Yes - must have held at least 1 year

  • 50 hour affidavit required: Yes

  • Driving restrictions: Anywhere from 5am to 9pm; anytime going to or from work; anytime going to or from authorized school activities; directly to or from any religious worship service held by a religious organization; anytime/anywhere with licensed adult - minimum age 21

  • Wireless restriction: No use of wireless communication devices except to report illegal activity or to summon medical or emergency help

  • Passenger restriction: No more than one non-sibling passenger under the age of 18

  • Time required to be held: 6 months - after licensee has held the restricted DL for 6 months or until age 17, whichever occurs first, if they have complied with all laws the restrictions will no longer apply

 

NON-RESTRICTED DRIVER’S LICENSE

  • Present acceptable proof of identity [at a Drivers License Exam Station]

  • Age: Minimum 17 years old

  • Testing required: Vision. Written and Drive - or Certificate Of Completion Issued By A Driving School [Provided At Our School]

  • Parental approval required: No

  • Driver education required: No

  • Instruction permit required: No

  • 50 hour affidavit required: Yes if 17; No if 18 or older

  • Driving restrictions: None

  • Wireless restriction: No

  • Passenger restriction: No

  • Time required to be held: None

  • 3. . Exchange Instruction Permit At Drivers License Office
    Once your teen has passed the written test and completed the Classroom portion of our course, they will receive a special Driving School Instruction Permit that can be used for practice driving with our Instructors and any adult 21 or over. However, in order to start the clock on the one-year waiting period to be eligible for the 15 Year Old Restricted License, they must exchange the Driving School Permit for a regular State issued Permit at the Drivers License Office. Possessing a Driving School Permit qualifies them to exchage Permits without having to take the written test at the Drivers License Office. Map
