The plot thickens, and as efforts to corral the coronavirus develop almost hour by hour, we are seeing unprecedented measures being taken that are affecting all of us on a level never before seen. If your'e like me, watching all of this unfold has been almost surreal, and one begins to wonder how far it will go, and when if will finally end.

The latest mandate from Johnson County and other surrounding Metro counties in the form of a 30 day stay-at-home order and closing of non-essential business has resulted in the cancellation of our upcoming classes and suspension of our driving instruction for the duration of the order. Our focus now is being prepared for the demand we are expecting to see when the order expires. Thankfully, we are fully equipped to handle just about any scenario in that regard.

As far as our Classroom Sessions are concerned, for the students whose classes have been cancelled, as well as for those still needing to enroll, we have added classes in May at both of our locations. With those additional class seats available, we are confident we will have the necessary capacity to handle the extra demand, and if those classes fill up, given our full staff of Classroom Instructors, we can easily add more.

Rescheduling drives is a different story, especially an entire months worth, but with our large fleet of Toyota Camry's, and over a dozen Driving Instructors available, we anticipate our students, both current and new, will be able to schedule their drives in a timely manner once the restrictions are lifted.

Please know our entire focus right now is ensuring that the teens who need to take Drivers Education to meet the requirements of the Kansas Graduated Drivers License will not be left behind in all of this. So too, our current students who are already enduring this 30 day forced hiatus deserve to be able to finish up the Course without any unnecessary delay.

With my amazing School Director Joan Peterson (retired Driver Education Director for the State of Kansas), and her hand picked staff of awesome Classroom and Driving Instructors, I have no doubt that we can minimize the fallout from this unprecedented national emergency, and quickly restore some normalcy once this is all over.

Thanks so much for taking the time to read this.

"As a parent, I know one of your biggest fears is your new teen driver getting hurt in a car crash. My experience as an airborne traffic reporter over the past three decades has given me a one-of-a-kind perspective on what causes wrecks, and even more important, what it takes to stay out of one. Our Collision Avoidance emphasis cuts to the core of your teen's biggest risk... being involved in a serious wreck. And isn't that really what it's all about?"

Standard Classroom Session

First, I want to tell you that through this coronavirus crisis we are still in business and are continuing to hold Classroom Sessions and provide Driving Instruction to our students. It is not, though, business as usual.

If you're like me, you're reeling from the daily developments in regards to the effort to curb the spread of the coronavirus. Let me assure you that I share the concerns we all have wondering how everything will play out, and I pray that it can be controlled and the outcome more positive than some have predicted.

With the landscape changing almost by the hour, we have been faced with a multitude of decisions on how to best handle the situation. First and foremost, it goes without saying our highest priority is the health and well being of our students and their families. We take this coronavirus threat very seriously, which is why we are committed to strictly following the guidelines and protocols issued by the CDC, many of which have been implemented locally as city wide restrictions.

One of those restrictions prohibits a gathering of more than 10 people in a group. Since our class size is 30 students, and our upcoming classes are already sold out, we were given the choice of either cancelling the classes, or finding another way. To that end, we have decided to split the classes into three full 8-hour sessions with 10 students each, conducted on the original Saturday, and the following Monday and Tuesday as well. With a classroom large enough to accommodate 30 students, there will be ample room to practice the appropriate social distancing, and hand washing facilities and hand sanitizer will be provided as well. We will continue the 10 student classes for as long as necessary.

As far as driving instruction is concerned, with our one-on-one instruction the gathering restrictions do not apply. However, with student and instructor in fairly close proximity, as with our classroom sessions, we have redoubled our efforts to sanitize the frequent touch points, and we are encouraging the liberal application of hand sanitizers that are available in each vehicle.

To say the extraordinary measures being taken nationwide in an effort to contain the coronavirus are unprecedented would be the classic understatement. It is hard enough for us adults to comprehend, and we're very concerned about how it's affecting impressionable, and vulnerable, young teens. Please know that in that regard we are making every effort possible to bring some semblance of normalcy to our Classroom Sessions and driving instruction, with the intent of doing whatever we can to promote a sense of comfort and hope.

I promise you that there is no other group of people more dedicated to your child's well being than my School Director Joan Peterson, her staff of awesome, caring instructors, and our support team. And that is more important now than ever. Should you choose our school for your teen's driving instruction, you can rest assured that they will be in good hands with people who genuinely do care about them and their well being.

Thanks so much for taking the time to read this message.

Congratulations On Passing The Class! Here's What To Do Next!

1. IMPORTANT! - If you are 16 or under and DO NOT have a state issued permit, you need to go to the Drivers License Office and EXCHANGE THE DOUBLE TEAM PERMIT that you received in class AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! Remember, you have to HOLD A STATE ISSUED PERMIT FOR A FULL YEAR before you are eligible for a Restricted License, so you want to get the one-year clock started right away!

2. Scheduling Driving Lessons - You may go online to schedule your behind the wheel driving time by going to our website, www.doubleteamdrivingschool.com, and clicking the "Schedule Driving Lessons" button on the home page. The page is password protected so YOU WILL NEED TO ENTER "DRIVER" AS THE PASSWORD TO SCHEDULE YOUR DRIVING LESSONS.
3. Where To Meet - You will have two options to choose from. Our standard departure is from the Double Team Offices where you attended the Classroom Session, and features three 2-Hour driving sessions. The "Pickup And Drop-off" option allows you to be picked up at the location of your choice for an additional fee, and is comprised of four 90 minute driving sessions.
4. All Scheduling Done Online - Once you're into our scheduling system, simply select Lesson #1 and you will be shown a list of our Driving Instructors and the times they are available. Please schedule all of your Driving Lessons with the same Instructor.
5. Practice Driving - It's important for you to schedule your Driving Lessons with enough time in between to accumulate adequate practice time. You will see our practice driving recommendations below, as well as when you schedule your driving time. NOT ALLOWING ENOUGH PRACTICE TIME BETWEEN LESSONS COULD PUT YOU AT RISK OF NEEDING EXTRA DRIVING INSTRUCTION AT AN ADDITIONAL COST before you can pass the Driving portion or our Course.

Our Recommended Practice Driving Program
Standard Office Departure: Three 2-Hour Drives
  • Before Lesson #1 - A total of at least 5 hours practice time
  • Before Lesson #2 - At least 15 hours

THANKS AGAIN FOR CHOOSING DOUBLE TEAM DRIVING SCHOOL!
PLEASE TELL ALL YOUR FRIENDS!

CONGRATULATIONS!

You Have Passed The Classroom Session Of The Double Team Course!

What's Next?

In this envelope is all the information you need to finish up the course. Here are some key points you need to know moving forward:

The Permit Maze

  • There is a lot of confusion about Permits. IT IS IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO KNOW THAT THE DOUBLE TEAM INSTRUCTION PERMIT THAT YOUR TEEN RECEIVED IN CLASS IS NOT THE SAME AS THE STATE ISSUED INSTRUCTION PERMIT ("IP").

  • Basically there are two kinds of permits: the Driver Education Permit, which allows your teen to drive with our Instructors and to practice with you, and the State issued IP, which is the official permit that the State recognizes in regards to Permit requirements.

  • In contrast to the State IP, which is valid for one year, the Driver Education Permit is good only during the time your teen is enrolled in our Course, which is in essence until they complete the Lessons with one of our Driving Instructors

  • However, as a benefit for attending an approved school, the State will allow teens with a Double Team Permit to exchange it for a valid State issued IP. And, and because they have already passed the written test during our Classroom Session, they are not required to take it at the Driver's License Office.

  • The State Of Kansas uses a Graduated Driver's License (GDL) that basically consists of a State Issued "Instruction Permit" (IP) which they may obtain at 14, Restricted Licenses at both 15 and 16, and an Unrestricted License at 17.

  • When teens turn 14, the GDL allows them to obtain an "Instruction Permit" (IP) to begin practice driving with an adult 21 or older. To ensure they have time to accumulate at least 25 hours of practice driving, THE STATE REQUIRES when they turn 14. It is specifically designed to ensure teens have practice driving time before driving without supervision., and to ensure they have accumulated enough time, It also provides for a Restricted License whereby your teen may drive without a supervising adult beginning at 15, and another Restricted License with fewer restrictions when they turn 16.

  • Because the IP is designed to provide practice driving time before driving without supervision, your teen must have held an IP for a full year before they qualify for a Restricted License. Permit you received today is a "Driver Education Permit", and is good only until you have completed the Double Team Course. It is NOT the same as the "State Instruction Permit" (Learner's Permit).

  • It's important for you to know that the Permit you received today is a "Driver Education Permit", and is NOT the same as the State issued Instruction Permit. The Driver's Education Permit is specifically designed to allow you to practice drive with you teen ONLY WHILE ENROLLED IN DOUBLE TEAM DRIVING SCHOOL, so basically until they have completed the driving portion of the course.
